Border crossings at POEs: Land alignment
Question
Ms. Kristina Michaud: Right now, we are talking a lot about border security. The Government of Canada has just announced that it is aligning with the United States to reduce hours of service at some border crossings. This will have an impact in some Quebec ridings where hours will be reduced starting January 6. We find that it sends a somewhat contradictory message when we say that we need to put more staff and officers at border crossings. It's like we are saying that we are cutting service hours. When I asked the government, I was told that, based on their figures, there were not a lot of crossings at certain land border crossings. Hence the reason why we decided to reduce the hours of service. In fact, we have the figures, but we have not broken them down by hour.
I don't think you have that information in front of you right now, but could you provide the committee with the numbers of all border crossings at every point of entry, for example the one at Trout River and Herdman, to see the moment when people were crossing the border? We were told that there were sometimes only two crossings after 6 p.m.. So if you have those figures, could you provide them to the committee, that would be very much appreciated.
Ms. Erin O'Gorman: Actually, for us it's not the reduction, but it's the alignment with the American hours. So, operationally, it is very difficult to have one side, Canada or the United States, open and the other one closed. So we always try to align with our partners on the border. So they're trying to align with us.
In fact, the average of the 30 points of entry is about two trucks or cars per hour. I can share the analysis with the committee. It's really a matter of safety that there is a partner on the other side of the border and that we move our employees where there is a greater volume, and therefore where the risks are higher.
