Inspections and fees

Before you bring animals (including pets) or plants into Canada, be aware that fees apply to some inspection and quarantine services provided by the CBSA and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

Inspections

Animals and plants coming into Canada are monitored and inspected to prevent the introduction of diseases and pests that could pose a risk to the country's health, wildlife, pets, livestock, crops, forests, lakes, rivers and oceans.

Sometimes, imported animals and plants must be quarantined in order to verify that they are free of harmful diseases and pests. Inspections are also necessary to ensure compliance with Canada's wildlife trade laws.

Inspection and quarantine fees

Travellers and commercial importers who use inspection and quarantine services to bring animals or plants into Canada must pay a portion of the cost for the CBSA or the CFIA to provide these services.

The goods and services tax and other applicable taxes may be charged on inspection services. The fees and taxes cannot be claimed under a traveller's personal exemption.

Note: Inspection fees apply to more than the importation of plants and animals. Fees are also applied for the inspection of wood packaging material and goods potentially contaminated with soil.

Schedule of inspection fees

The CBSA is responsible for collecting fees for food, plant and animal (FPA) inspections performed at the border by border services officers (BSOs).

The following Schedule of inspection fees is a summary of the fees collected by the CBSA. Items not in this schedule mean they are either subject to a CFIA inspection or not subject to any inspection. For more information regarding all existing inspection fees, please refer to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Fees Notice, which also contains last year's amounts.

Fees increase annually and are updated on March 31 of each year.
