Physical abilities test

Transcript

Opening graphic with the words "CBSA" "Physical abilities test" over a photo of CBSA recruits on an outdoor run.

Text on screen over a blurred background: "Ground defence" "Controlled sandbag rotations X6" "36KG"

Video footage of a man performing the ground defence component of the test, which consists of simulated ground movements that must be completed using a sandbag that represents the relative weight of a torso for the average Canadian adult. Recruits will transfer a weighted sandbag from one side of the mat to the opposite side while lying on their back. Two sets of this movement are performed at the beginning of the test and again at the end.

Text on screen over a blurred background: “Physical control” “Sled push-pull” “37KG (f)”

Video footage of a man performing the physical control component of the test, which was developed based on an "apprehension or restraint of a suspect using a physical control scenario". The minimum weight standard for the sled was determined in a study designed to determine the amount of force required to push and/or pull the suspect most likely to resist arrest (and require intervention leading to the ground) off balance and into a vulnerable position where a takedown can be effectively completed (i.e., 37 kg of force). Recruits push and pull a weighted sled through a triangular formation, once at the beginning of the test and once at the end.

Text on screen over a blurred background: “Agility” “Modified Illinois test

Video footage of a man performing the agility drill component of the test, which is designed to evaluate an individual's ability to move quickly and assertively in different directions. This last component represents the agility/movement and strength necessary to effectively perform the high intensity movements required during "use of force" training, such as hitting, kicking, punching, dodging, blocking, and others.

Video footage of a man completing the remainder of the test.
