Tariff Notice – 49-1

Tariff Notice 49 (March 4, 2010) advised you of the Ways and Means Motion regarding changes to the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) rate of duty for on productivity-improving machinery and equipment and goods imported for further manufacturing in Canada.
The first paragraph of the motion lists tariff items for which the MFN rate of duty is reduced to zero. The second paragraph provides a list of tariff items for which the MFN rate of duty is reduced to the rate specified, and which will be reduced to zero by January 1, 2015. There are no changes to the numbering or statistical breakouts for those tariff items.
In paragraphs 3 through 19 changes to certain tariff item numbering are detailed.
There are five instances in which a current tariff item is deleted and replaced by two new tariff items; they are shown in Table 1 (below).
There are five instances in which a new tariff item has been created for goods which previously fell under a residual ("Other") item; these are shown in Table 2 (below). The table identifies the residual item from which the goods have been extracted as the "Source Tariff Item"; it remains unchanged.
There are two instances in which the tariff number has not changed but the description has been modified; these are shown in Table 3 (below). Under tariff item 8477.80.91, which is MFN dutiable, the goods described by the text that has been removed would now fall to be classified in the residual tariff item (8477.80.99) which is MFN duty-free. Tariff item 8716.90.10 is MFN duty-free and the addition of "or repair" expands its scope, rendering more goods MFN duty-free.
