CBSA seizes 46 kilos of cocaine at Sarnia border crossing

Sarnia, Ontario, April 3, 2008 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at the Blue Water Bridge border crossing in Point Edward (near Sarnia), Ontario, have seized 46 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of $5.75 million.

Border services officers intercepted the contraband drugs on March 29, 2008, at approximately 9:30 a.m. during the examination of a passenger vehicle. The officers uncovered a total of 46 plastic-wrapped bricks of cocaine in a compartment between the rear seat and the trunk area of the vehicle.

A 42-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, both of Kitchener, Ontario, have been charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with importing a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

“This seizure is an excellent example of the outstanding work our officers continue to do in keeping illegal drugs out of our communities, “ said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. ”That is why our Government is committed to a National Anti-Drug Strategy, and why we are investing $3.3 million, over 2 years, in the CBSA to enhance its ability to inhibit the cross-border flow of illicit drugs.”
