CBSA officers at the Ambassador Bridge seize 59 kilos of cocaine hidden in cupboard
Windsor, Ontario, July 12, 2007 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at the Ambassador Bridge have seized 59 kilos of cocaine worth an estimated street value of $7.4 million. This is the fourth significant cocaine seizure made by CBSA officers at the Ambassador Bridge this year.
“I want to commend our CBSA officers for the fine work that they do on behalf of all Canadians,” said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. “Canada’s New Government is committed to keeping illegal drugs out of our communities, and our CBSA officers are the first line of defence. This seizure alone has kept 59 kilos of cocaine from entering our communities,” added Minister Day.
The drugs were uncovered on June 23, 2007, by CBSA officers who were examining a tractor-trailer that had been referred for a selective examination. The officers discovered 50 vacuum-sealed packages of cocaine stacked inside a cupboard of the sleeping area of the tractor-trailer. Both the Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (VACIS) and detector dogs were used in the examination. The driver of the tractor-trailer has been arrested by the CBSA.
Earlier this year, CBSA officers at the Ambassador Bridge discovered 171 kilos of cocaine in a shipment of produce, 37 kilos of cocaine hidden in a shipment of ice cream and another 30 kilos in a shipment of oranges. In total, these seizures have prevented over 200 kilos of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $37.5 million, from entering Canada.
