Over 13 kilos of narcotics seized at Pearson Airport

Mississauga, Ontario, September 23, 2005 - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at Pearson International Airport have seized over 13 kilos of narcotics in two separate incidents.

On September 14, 2005, a 41-year-old male resident of Ajax, Ontario, who was travelling from Jamaica, was arrested after CBSA officers discovered more than three kilos of marijuana hidden in sugar cane shoots. The estimated value of the narcotics was over $75,000.

In a separate incident on September 18, 2005, a 31-year-old female was arrested after CBSA officers discovered more than 10 kilos of heroin in her suitcase. The drugs, worth an estimated $4 million, were hidden in the false bottoms of her luggage. The German national was on a flight from Brazil.

The two individuals were charged with importing a controlled substance and turned over to the RCMP.

"These seizures are an excellent example of the outstanding work done by CBSA officers," said Norm Sheridan, Director of CBSA Passenger Operations. "Stopping smuggling of illegal drugs at our borders plays a big part in making our communities safer."

Since January 1, 2005, the CBSA Passenger Operations at Pearson International Airport has made over 325 narcotics seizures, keeping illegal drugs worth more than $66.3 million off the streets of Canada.
