CBSA officers at Montréal-Mirabel International Airport make a significant drug seizure

Montréal, Quebec, December 20, 2012 — Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers at the Montréal-Mirabel Airport recently made a significant drug seizure when they discovered 64 kilos of Catha Edulis (khat) inside two parcels sent by a postal courier service.

The examination of two parcels sent from a company based in London (United Kingdom) to another company in Montréal revealed the presence of two computer cases wrapped in carbon paper. The interior of the computer cases contained several bunches of Catha Edulis, with a total value of $32,000.

"This seizure demonstrates that our officers work tirelessly to prevent the importation of illicit drugs into Canada, regardless of the methods used," said Benoît Chiquette, CBSA Regional Director General for Quebec.

CBSA officers handed the drugs over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for investigation.

Since January 1, 2012, border services officers working in Montréal's airports have made 457 drug seizures valued at $13,549,519. At Montréal-Mirabel, in the courier mode, 162 drug seizures have been made with a value of $300,265. Since the beginning of 2012, CBSA officers in Quebec have made 1563 drug seizures valued at more than $77 million.
