CBSA intercepts over $2 million in contraband tobacco in two seizures at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing

Montréal (Quebec), August 26, 2010 — Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers intercepted almost 17,000 kg of contraband tobacco with an estimated street value of over $2 million, at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing in two separate seizures this summer.

On July 1st, CBSA officers intercepted 8400 kg of illicit tobacco in a shipment containing paper waste. In the second seizure, August 10, CBSA officers discovered a tractor-trailer containing 8400 kg of cut and dried contraband tobacco, distributed within 84 boxes.

“These seizures are a prime example of how the CBSA is working to keep contraband tobacco off our streets,” said the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety. “Our government realizes that the proceeds of illegal tobacco fuel organized crime and undermine the safety of our communities. The CBSA continues to demonstrate its important role in the safety and security of our communities.”

Since the beginning of the year, $9.7 million dollars in tobacco products have been seized across the country.

The Customs Act stipulates that all goods entering Canada must be declared to the CBSA. Smuggling, untrue statements and other Customs Act violations may lead to prosecution in a court of law. The CBSA investigation into these cases continues.
