Major Arms Seizure in the Eastern Townships
Montreal, Quebec, December 21, 2007 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers have seized firearms and other prohibited weapons at the Highwater border crossing in the Eastern Townships.
On December 12, 2007, two individuals from the United States, aged 20 and 25, respectively, were intercepted entering Canada through the Highwater border crossing. After responding evasively to the officer’s questions and providing suspicious information on their itinerary, the individuals were referred to the secondary inspection area. Their vehicle was found to contain a number of handguns, knives and other prohibited weapons, as well as bulletproof vests and ammunition. Both individuals were placed in detention, and the prohibited weapons and the vehicles were seized.
“This seizure is testimony to the vigilance of our border officers,” said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. “Thanks to the diligence of CBSA officers, the seizure of illegal weapons ensures that those weapons are kept off our streets.”
Criminal charges have been laid against the individuals, who have appeared at the Granby courthouse today charged with making a false statement and smuggling, under the Customs Act.
In 2005–2006, CBSA seized 2,534 weapons, including 634 firearms.
