U.S. fugitive removed from Canada

Winnipeg, Manitoba, January 18, 2007 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) confirmed today that U.S. fugitive Calvin Herring was removed from Canada and turned over to U.S. authorities.

“I commend our U.S. partners, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the CBSA for their efforts in intercepting, arresting and removing this man. Canada's New Government stands firm in its commitment to maintain the safety and security of all Canadians and to proceed with the deportation of criminals from our country,” said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety.

On December 29, 2006, Mr. Herring illegally entered Canada near the Emerson border crossing in Manitoba. He was apprehended by the RCMP and later turned over to CBSA authorities. In cooperation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the CBSA determined Mr. Herring’s true identity and lengthy criminal history. He is wanted in Alabama for breach of bail conditions and failing to register as a sex offender in that state.

The ability to remove people is vital to protecting the safety and security of Canada, maintaining the integrity of the immigration program and ensuring fairness for those who come to this country lawfully.
