Canada Border Services Agency lays 78 criminal charges in illegal firearms investigations

Vancouver, British Columbia, August 1, 2008 - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has just completed extensive investigations into the illegal importation and sale of replica firearms in the Lower Mainland.   During the course of these investigations, the CBSA laid 78 criminal charges and seized over 800 replica firearms.

“The Government of Canada is taking action to combat the criminal use of firearms and trafficking in illegal weapons,” said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety.  These successful investigations demonstrate the CBSA’s commitment to deal with and prevent cross-border crime.  These arrests and seizures would not have been possible without the dedication and diligence of CBSA Officers, who work tirelessly to protect the safety and security of Canadian families and communities”.

Two individuals of Mission, BC, are the most recent to face charges ranging from smuggling and making false statements, to trafficking and unlawfully importing replica firearms, which are prohibited devices.

The two-year investigation by the CBSA’s Criminal Investigations Division focused on the improper use of Business Firearms Licences by purported movie prop supply companies.

The CBSA is determined to combat the illegal importation of replica firearms and prohibited devices into Canada. Each year, hundreds of firearms and prohibited devices are confiscated at various points of entry across Canada. These interventions help to keep our communities safe and secure."
