CBSA officers seize $19 million in drugs at the Port of Halifax

Halifax, Nova Scotia, October 23, 2006 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at the Port of Halifax have seized over 626 kilos of hash, hash oil and marijuana worth an estimated street value of $19 million. Further investigation by the Toronto Police Service has led to the arrest of two individuals.

“This is an excellent example of law enforcement organizations working together,” said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. “Drug seizures of this magnitude show that the CBSA and its partners are making a real difference in the protection of Canadians.”

Officers discovered the drugs on July 25, 2006, while searching a marine container bound for Toronto. The shipment consisted of assorted produce that included pumpkins, yams and sweet potatoes.

The container was scanned through the Vehicle Cargo Inspection System (VACISTM) that uses gamma‑ray technology. The system detected anomalies in the floor of the container. CBSA officers removed the floor and found the drugs.

This is the fourth seizure of illegal drugs by CBSA officers at the Port of Halifax in recent months. Since January 2006, CBSA examinations at the Port have kept more than 5,658 kilos of illegal drugs valued at over $127 million off Canadian streets.

Video footage of the seizure is available.
