CBSA investigates illegal sale and distribution of duty-free goods

Goose Bay, Labrador, June 9, 2005 - As a result of an investigation by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) into the illegal sale and distribution of duty-free goods by a private company contracted by Allied personnel at 5 Wing, Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Goose Bay, Labrador, charges have been laid against an international trading company, foreign nationals, and Canadian civilian residents.

"CBSA has sufficient evidence to lay charges under the Customs Act," said Andrew LeFrank, Director of Investigations, CBSA, Atlantic Region. "The goods consisted of alcohol and tobacco products."

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Forces assisted CBSA, the lead agency, with the investigation.

"In order to conduct a thorough investigation all parties worked together," added Mr. LeFrank. "The Canadian Forces are not under investigation. As well, none of the current visiting forces are implicated in these charges."

CBSA conducts investigations of businesses and individuals where there are indications of deliberate non-compliance with Customs legislation. CBSA is committed to providing a level playing field for honest Canadian businesses by pursuing those who evade the proper payment of duties and taxes in Canada.
