Notes
- The issue of allowing NEXUS Marine members to land on private property was recently removed as a feature of the program. [Return to text]
- Before the introduction of NEXUS Marine, CANPASS Private Boat, and Canadian Border Boat Landing Program (I-68) were available for pre-approved, low-risk recreational boaters to enter Canada and the U.S., respectively. [Return to text]
- NEXUS Highway members who reside in other regions can use the NEXUS Marine reporting process in the pilot zone. [Return to text]
- Applicants submit their processing fees to the CBSA. Those who pay the processing fee with an American credit card are charged at the current US$ exchange rate for CAN$80. [Return to text]
- The NEXUS Highway video is shown to new NEXUS Marine members as membership also allows them to cross the border by car, using dedicated NEXUS Highway lanes. [Return to text]
- All recreational boaters use the TRC but NEXUS Marine members can announce their arrival between 4 hours and 30 minutes before landing. Those who are non-permit holders must call the TRC when they have docked at a designated site and are then instructed on how to proceed. [Return to text]
- Should there be non-members on board, the member is asked to go to a designated marina. [Return to text]
- Note that CBP does not have a TRC system similar to that of the CBSA, and keeps passage and member information in paper files. CBP has said that an electronic recording system for boaters is in development and may be in use by mid-summer 2006. [Return to text]
- CBP statistics were not made available to the evaluation team. [Return to text]
- CBSA management in the Northern Ontario and Pacific regions was interviewed to get a perspective on issues relevant to the possible implementation of NEXUS Marine in other regions. [Return to text]
- A total of 241 members, not including 11 who were included in the survey pre-test, were interviewed from a total of 402 NEXUS Marine member households. This represents 60% of the households. [Return to text]
- According to the CBSA TRC passage reports and NEXUS membership files, 57% of recreational boaters who used the NEXUS Marine passage process were U.S. residents, which means that the respondents fully reflect the survey population. [Return to text]
- The error rate for each of the survey questions varies depending on the number of responses.

- Note that before the creation of CBSA in December 2003, the Working Group’s Canadian representatives included the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Similarly, the U.S. representatives in the Working Group included CBP and the Immigration and Naturalization Service. [Return to text]

- The percentage of satisfied participants includes both “satisfied” and “extremely satisfied”, while dissatisfied includes “dissatisfied” and “extremely dissatisfied”. Percentages do not add up to 100 because those who reported “neither satisfied nor dissatisfied” are not included. [Return to text]
- Percentages may not add to 100 due to rounding. Respondents include only members who have used the NEXUS Marine process and did not indicate N/A or DK/NR [Return to text]
- This is computed based on CBSA passage information generated the first week of September 2005 and a NEXUS Marine membership list generated from files at the Enrolment Centre during the third week of September 2005. [Return to text]
